For a guy who photographs couples having sex, Ricardo Scipio gets particularly uncomfortable when the P word is mentioned. Within minutes of speaking to the Courier, the year-old photographer is quick to disassociate his vision with pornography. Instead, he uses terms such as joy, sex positive and celebration when referring to getting shots of couples getting hot. Scipio is in the midst of a mounting a cross-Canada tour to take photos for the second instalment of his book, The Sex Goddess Project Book 2.

I n , the street photographer Jeff Mermelstein took a shot in midtown Manhattan. After Mermelstein had captured the image on his iPhone — which he now favours over Leicas and Canon SLRs — he zoomed in on her phone screen. She had been searching for information about wills. That brought my attention into a new territory. New territory perhaps because the photographer is no digital native. The kind of imagery he has made for much of his working life has more in common with the classic, 35mm sidewalk reportage of Diane Arbus or Joel Meyerowitz , than it has with the lines we all write in text messages. Nevertheless, he sensed he was on to something.
